The text is a speech given by the mayor of Langenberg (North-Rhine/Westphalia), Konrad Angermann, on the occasion of the receipt of a roll of honour (Gedenktafel) recording the names of townsmen who had died in World War One. Angermann's speech expresses nationalist sentiments typical for the time and which indicate a refusal to accept that Germany had been defeated on the battlefield. Angermann was close to the Deutschnationale Volkspartei (DNVP) and the rhetoric of his speech is likely to have been influenced by his political views.Downloads
