The text contains several of Marianne Angermann's letters from Madrid during the Spanish Civil War to her parents in Dresden. When postal communication was no longer possible because of conditions during the War, her mother began expressing her concerns for her daughter in the form of diary entries. Marianne and her husband, Franz Bielschowsky, worked at Military Hospital No. 6 in Madrid-Chamartín during the Siege of Madrid.
